location: Carrizozo, NM
date: Sept 1994
time: Sunset

sighting: I was working on a project at Valley of Fires (Carrizozo) in the summer of 1994, and was taking my evening walk around the campground. I saw an object about the size and brightness of Venus to the Southwest, then noticed it was moving slowly. I decided it was the sun reflecting off of a jetliner, a fairly common sight, and wathced it for about 30 seconds.
Then, all of a sudden, it shot northwards, passing in front of a wall of cumulus clouds that had formed over the Oscura Mtns, passing behind a cumulus tower rising over the area around Mockingbird Gap. It stopped over Chupadera Mesa (still with a wall of clouds behind it-assuming their ceiling was around 35,000 ft, it would have been at an altitude of about 25,000 ft) and hung there for about 4 seconds, then split into three parts, each about the size and brightness of a medium star. The three 'stars' then shot straight up, passing through some high clouds, and disappeared.
After it was all over, I looked back where I had originally seen the thing, and guessed it was probably over the Organ Mountains. Means it covered about 80 miles in around 2 seconds. The base had been closed that afternoon (we were working on WSMR, as well as the BLM land adjacent to it, and had to call each day for range closing reports), and I'm 99.999% sure that whatever I saw was related to White Sands. I used to see weird things over Kirtland when I lived in ABQ as well, but never anything this spectacular. I mention it because it sounds a lot like some of the lights you report over Artesia.

PS-the funniest thing about this was that right after it happened, I looked around to see if anybody else was around who might have seen it too. The campground was full of RVs, but everybody was inside, and in each and every camper I could see the blue glow of a TV set (probably watching the X-files:-), and I thought "Great! I finally see a UFO, and there's not a soul around to back me up-I'll never be able to tell anybody about it" (I'm a scientist, and people look at you kinda funny when you make unverifiable claims). But about 10 minutes later, my field assistants showed up. They'd been in Roswell for the day, had just pulled over the rise into the valley when it happened, and saw the whole thing!
