When I was a child growing up in the suburbs of Kansas City, Mo. I observed
a strange light in the sky.
I was probably 10 or 11 and was playing outside in our backyard with a
friend of mine...another girl, about 9 years old. The first thing we noticed
was not the sight, it was the sound. We could hear a distinct, variable
pitched humming sound and could not tell where it was coming from. We were
leaning on a fence at the side of our house and looking toward the treeline
behind the houses across the street. The humming noise got louder and we
started to look around, wondering what it was, when we both noticed a large,
glowing and pulsating light. It was visible through the trees and moving
behind the treeline from right to left. The light was ball-shaped and varied
from orangish/yellowish to reddish in color. We soon realized that the
humming sound was coming from the light and we really got scared. We jumped
the fence and went running into the front yard and across the street to my
friend's house. Her mom was home and we burst into the house screaming for
her to come outside and look.... she humored us and ran to her backyard to
see what was frightening us so. She froze as she looked at the ball of light
and uttered a single sentence as the "ball" disappeared behind the treeline
and horizon, "That sure as hell isn't an airplane.." She ran inside and
grabbed an instamatic camera hoping to snap a photo. By the time she
returned the object was gone. She was visibly shaken, as were we. We
repeatedly asked, "What was it?" She finally called the police and a nearby
Air Force Base, asking if any other sightings were made of the object. They
told her "no", but on the local news that night, there were reports of local
sightings of a "ball of light that made a peculiar humming sound". That at
least made us feel not so alone. I'll never know what it was, but will
always remember the fear.
