location: Sunland, CA

date: 1982/83, summer?

time: 9-10PM

sighting: Looking north from side of garage
one night after raking up the yard I saw a
 faint star-like light "descend" in a zig-zag
pattern, something like the floating leaf motion
others have described for some UFO's. The light
source appeared to drop behind mountains
above the Tujunga Canyon area. Duration was
at most a few seconds, but it was not a meteor,
aircraft, rocket or satellite (I've observed plenty
as an amateur stargazer and former aerospace
engineer). The light did not blink or create any
trail but went incredibly fast. The visibility was
very good, and I am far-sighted. I thought
it might possibly be an insect lit by ground lights
except it looked far away and the intensity did
not change noticeably. The direction was toward
Edwards AFB, from where I sometimes could hear
sonic booms from space shuttle landings.
However the light was soundless. Never saw
anything like it before or since.
