This is verifiable, and official by the U.S. Air Force.
I was stationed then at the Air Force Base there during 
that time. I went out side when I saw many people out 
looking at the sky. What I saw was a very large metalic 
ball, about the size of a large hanger just hovering 
motionless over the mountains. It remained there for 
hours. We all thought it was a large balloon. About 3 
hours later all military were recalled to the base. 
When we got to the base we were notified that a 
unidentified object was in the sky over the base. F-16 
fighters were lauched to intercept. About that time a 
large beam of light hit the side of the moutain causing 
a large fire on the side of the mountain. I observed 
the jet fighters approaching the object. at that time 
the object speed off about 100 times faster than our 
most sofisticated jet aircraft. This never made 
national attention. We were all told to hush it up.
It made the Local News paper, and was witnessed by most 
of the town at that time. It never made a sound when it 
took off. It left its mark on the mountain.
