location: approx 40 miles sw of Chicago, Ill
date: 1967 - 1968
time: 10 p.m.

sighting: My wife, my baby and I were driving back to Chicago following a short business trip to Springfield. The weather was clear and the sky was filled with stars everywhere you looked. We were on a flat two-lane highway in the middle of farmland miles from city lights --- it was very dark. As I was driving along, I eventually became aware of a bright white light near the highway. I judged it to be approx 100 yds or so to my left, approx 50 - 100 ft high and perhaps a mile ahead of me. I thought it was a relay tower. I became interested because two or three minutes after noticing it, we had not pulled along side of it and we were probably doing 60 mph or more. At this point, I mentioned it to my wife. We watched for a couple more minutes and it still appeared to be the same distance from the car. Suddenly it took off to the north at a 45 degree angle at a very high rate of speed. After 5 or 6 seconds it was so high we lost sight of it among all the stars. I lost sight of it first since I looked back at the road once or twice. Again, we saw nothing out there --- just flat farmland. We were not close to the Joliet arsenal!
